Road Accidents Claim 22 Lives in Morocco’s Urban Areas over Past Week


Rabat: Twenty-two people were killed and 2,364 others were injured, including 99 severely, in the 1,749 traffic accidents in urban areas during the week from January 26 to February 1, according to the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).



According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, these accidents are mainly due to driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, failure to maintain a safe distance, pedestrian inattention, lack of control of vehicles, failure to stop at stop signs, changing direction without signaling, unauthorized changes of direction, driving in the wrong direction, running red lights, drunk driving, driving in the left lane, and improper passing, the press release says.



With regard to traffic control and enforcement, the security services issued 44,695 contraventions and drew up 6,879 reports that were submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, while 37,816 fines were paid for a total amount of MAD 8,373,500.



Additionally, 4,801 vehicles were impounded, while 6,879 documents were withdrawn and 460 vehicles immobilized, the press release concludes.
