Morocco’s Election to AU Peace and Security Council Highlights King Mohammed VI’s Role in African Stability

Addis ababa: Morocco’s recent election to the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) in a decisive first-round vote underscores His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s influential role in fostering peace and stability throughout Africa, as stated by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita. The election, which grants Morocco a two-year term on this pivotal Pan-African body, signifies recognition of the Kingdom’s efforts in promoting a stable and peaceful continent.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Minister Bourita emphasized that this election reflects the strategic approach championed by His Majesty the King, prioritizing conflict resolution through reason, adherence to international law, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions. Bourita highlighted that this marks the third occurrence in nine years, since Morocco’s re-entry into the African Union in 2017, that the Kingdom has been selected to serve on the PSC, a key institution for managing crises and addressing Africa’s security challenges.

Bourita further articulated that the vote is an acknowledgment of Morocco’s comprehensive strategy in peace and security under the Sovereign’s leadership. This approach, he noted, integrates development, mediation, peacekeeping operations, and the reconciliation of differing perspectives. The Foreign Minister expressed confidence that Morocco, drawing from its accumulated experience from previous mandates, is well-equipped to enhance its contributions to peace, security, and stability across the continent.

During the election held in Addis Ababa, Morocco secured a commanding two-thirds majority, receiving 34 votes at the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, further solidifying its standing and influence within the African Union.
