Morocco’s Navy Frees Liberia-Flagged Freighter Without Incident Off Tan-Tan.

Tan-Tan: Two Royal Navy units, with a Commandos team on board, freed the crew of a Liberia-flagged freighter, on Monday 110 km off Tan-Tan without incident.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Rabat’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received an alert on November 4, 2024, reporting that the crew of a Liberia-flagged cargo ship, located 110 km off Tan-Tan, had been threatened by would-be migrants who planned to divert it to the Canary Islands.

In response to the alert, two Royal Navy units, accompanied by a Commandos team, were immediately dispatched to the location. The operation successfully freed the crew without any incident, as confirmed by the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces in a press release.

The 54 would-be migrants were subsequently taken back to the Port of Tan-Tan and handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie to undergo the usual administrative procedures.
