Madrid: Morocco’s top police chief was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Spanish Civil Guard, the highest distinction granted by the security institution to foreign dignitaries. The award ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the Director General of the Spanish Civil Guard Mercedes Gonz¡lez Fern¡ndez and Major General Luis Pel¡ez Pi±eiro, alongside several Moroccan and Spanish senior security officials.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Spanish Interior Minister expressed that this prestigious award to Hammouchi is a recognition by the Spanish authorities of his significant contributions to enhancing the security partnership between Morocco and Spain. The minister highlighted Hammouchi’s efforts to bolster operational cooperation and mutual assistance to mitigate security risks for both nations.
The minister further commended Hammouchi for his role in transforming Morocco’s Security and Territorial Surveillance services into a leading model in combating terrorism and organized crime. He reiterated Spain’s commitment to fostering cooperation with Morocco, particularly in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties.
Spanish Civil Guard officials echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the award signifies high appreciation for the collaboration between the Spanish Civil Guard and the Moroccan security services in various security areas.
The official ceremony followed the Spanish government’s approval, based on a proposal by the Interior Minister, to honor Hammouchi for his efforts in promoting joint security cooperation. On the sidelines of the ceremony, discussions were held between Moroccan and Spanish security officials to explore ways to enhance joint operations against terrorism, organized crime, and other security challenges.
Previously, in 2014, Hammouchi received the Order of the Honorary Cross of Merit for Security from Spanish authorities. His exemplary contributions have also been recognized by French and Arab organizations, including high decorations from the French Republic and the Prince Naif Medal for Arab Security.
Hammouchi’s achievements were first recognized in 2011 when King Mohammed VI awarded him the Officer of the Ouissam El Arch for his role in investigations related to the Argana terrorist attack, marking a first in Morocco’s security history.
