Rabat:The decision not to renew the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso) has been described as a "positive step" towards resolving a long-standing conflict, according to Diogo Pacheco de Amorim, Vice-President of Portugal's Assembly of the Republic.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Pacheco de Amorim emphasized the outdated nature of the Minurso mission, which was established in 1991. He stated that the current international debate is more focused on the core political solution and the adaptation of United Nations mechanisms, rather than continuing with a process whose limitations have become evident.
Pacheco de Amorim noted that the conclusion of this mission, which he deemed obsolete, is not expected to have any impact on the ground. He highlighted the importance of the UN Security Council vote on October 30, which saw eleven members supporting a text that endorses the Moroccan autonomy initiative under the Kingdom's sovereignty as the sole basis for negotiations.
He further stated that these developments call for other parties involved to adopt a more diplomatically realistic approach. Maintaining an "outdated approach," he argued, is contrary to the current trends in international discussions concerning the Moroccan Sahara.
In conclusion, Pacheco de Amorim pointed out that Security Council Resolution 2797 has established the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only realistic and enduring path towards achieving a final resolution of this regional conflict.
