New york: Palau has officially expressed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region and endorsed the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for resolving the regional dispute. This position was articulated during a bilateral meeting in New York between Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Gustav Ngiracheluolu Aitaro, the Minister of State of Palau.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, both nations signed a cooperation roadmap for the 2025-2027 period, aligning with the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at fostering South-South cooperation with developing countries. In this agreement, Palau acknowledged Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and commended Morocco’s efforts to achieve a realistic and lasting political solution through compromise.
Palau emphasized that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the sole solution to the regional dispute, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions since 2007, including resolution 2756. By doing so, Palau aligns itself with numerous countries across Africa, Europe, the Arab world, Asia, and America, which support Morocco’s claim and the Autonomy Plan as the definitive resolution to the dispute.
Additionally, Palau expressed its gratitude to King Mohammed VI for Morocco’s commitment to enhancing relations with Pacific Island States, recognizing the Kingdom’s role in advancing South-South cooperation. Morocco, through its southern provinces, serves as a link between various regions in the Global South.
In supporting Palau’s developmental priorities, Morocco has pledged to share its expertise, particularly in implementing Sustainable Development Goals, as part of this cooperative roadmap.
