Abidjan: The promotion of the rule of law and the protection of democracy were at the heart of discussions among the respective presidents of the parliaments of Morocco, France, C´te d’Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Abidjan. This meeting emphasized the necessity of these principles as fundamental conditions for building a better future for upcoming generations. The presidents expressed their unwavering determination to collaborate towards achieving this goal, respecting the sovereignty of states.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the meeting brought together key figures: Rachid Talbi El Alami, President of the Moroccan House of Representatives; Mme Ya«l Braun-Pivet, President of the French National Assembly; Adama Bictogo, President of the Ivorian National Assembly; and Aim© Boji Sangara, President of the National Assembly of the DRC. It was held on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of C´te d’Ivoire’s re-elected president, Alassane Ouattara.
They expressed commitment to fostering cooperation and collaboration at both bilateral and multilateral levels with other legislative bodies. Their focus is on promoting a culture of peace and democracy while giving due attention to strengthening the rule of law.
The parliamentary leaders highlighted the pivotal role of parliamentary diplomacy in establishing constructive communication, promoting mutual understanding, and facilitating dialogue among nations. The meeting offered participants the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience on common issues such as renewable energy, water stress, climate change, artificial intelligence, and the digitization of parliamentary work.
In a statement to the press following the meeting, Talbi El Alami expressed his joy at being in C´te d’Ivoire to represent HM King Mohammed VI at the inauguration ceremony. He described it as a solemn moment and a confirmation of democracy, especially when democracy faces threats in parts of the world. He noted that C´te d’Ivoire has consistently defended and promoted the principles of peace and democracy.
Talbi El Alami lauded C´te d’Ivoire’s democratic process, emphasizing the country’s efforts in organizing elections and allowing the people to elect their president, a choice confirmed by the Constitutional Council. He also praised the quality of the infrastructure in C´te d’Ivoire, acknowledging its progress towards development.
He further highlighted the exemplary bilateral relations between Morocco and C´te d’Ivoire, attributing this to the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Alassane Ouattara. He recalled the historic visits made by the Moroccan Sovereign to C´te d’Ivoire, marking the depth of their relations.
