Portugal Announces Backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, Aligning with International Efforts


Lisbon: Portugal has declared its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, a move described as “extremely important” by former Portuguese Minister José Arnaut. This decision is viewed as a reinforcement of Morocco’s position, aligning with the United Nations framework on the matter.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Arnaut emphasized that this development is a significant signal, reflecting the historical ties between Portugal and Morocco. It aligns with both European and international trends that support the Autonomy Initiative as a viable solution. Arnaut highlighted that the initiative is consistent with international legality and noted the geographical proximity and historical connections between Rabat and Lisbon.

Arnaut expressed satisfaction with the Portuguese government’s decision, underscoring his personal connection to Morocco. The former minister pointed out that the decision is part of a broader international momentum, driven by the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, in support of Moroc
co’s sovereignty and the Autonomy Initiative.

On Tuesday, Portugal expressed its “full support” for the Autonomy Initiative, terming it “the most serious, credible, and constructive basis” for resolving the dispute. This stance was formalized in a Joint Statement by Morocco and Portugal’s Foreign Ministers following discussions in Lisbon. Portugal recognized the significance of the issue for Morocco and acknowledged the diligent efforts by the Kingdom within the United Nations framework to achieve a fair and lasting political solution.
