In memory of the late writer and thinker, the stele of the new teachers’ room was unveiled at a ceremony marked by the presence of the adviser of HM the King, Andre Azoulay, chairman of the Edmond Amran El Maleh Foundation, along with intellectuals and representatives of the French diplomatic corps accredited in Rabat.

The ceremony was an opportunity for many relatives and friends of Edmond Amran El Maleh, who passed away in 2010, to pay a heartfelt tribute to his values and his legacy.

Welcoming the inauguration of this room, Azoulay delivered a moving testimony about this great Moroccan thinker of Jewish faith and highlighted his militancy and his qualities as a committed author and philosopher.

“He was a great nationalist activist,” he said, adding that Edmond Amran El Maleh is known for his strong attachment to his Moroccan Jewish origins, and especially to the city of Essaouira.

“He was inspired in Essaouira by the fruitful sharing between the Sufi schools of Muslims and the Kabbalahs of the Jews,” explained Azoulay, saying that late Amran El Maleh will remain engraved in the common memory, the very foundation of the Moroccan national identity.

The principal of Lycée Descartes, Najat Delpeyrat said that this event is part of a program to rename all the rooms of Lycée Descartes in a spirit of cultural diversification. “The room named after Edmond Amran El Maleh is dedicated to his memory as a symbol of multiculturalism, “she told M24, MAP’s 24-h rolling news channel.

The attendance watched a documentary devoted to the Judeo-Moroccan musical heritage entitled “In your eyes, I see my country,” in the presence of its director Kamal Hachkar.

The film tells the story of Neta and Amit Cohen who live in Jerusalem. Together, they created a band where they re-appropriate and revisit their Jewish-Moroccan musical heritage.

Approached by MAP, the filmmaker Kamal Hachkar said he was “happy” to attend the inauguration of a room at Descartes High School in memory of the late Edmond Amran El Maleh.

Lycée Descartes had inaugurated last March a room dedicated to Nour-Eddine Saïl as a tribute to one of the leading figures of the Moroccan cinema.
