Road Accidents Claim 24 Lives in Morocco’s Urban Areas over Past Week


Rabat: Twenty-four people were killed and 2,748 others were injured, including 85 severely, in 2,025 traffic accidents in urban areas during the week of March 09-15, according to the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).



According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, these accidents were primarily caused by driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, failure to maintain a safe distance, and pedestrian inattention. Other factors included lack of vehicle control, failure to stop at stop signs, changing direction without signaling, unauthorized changes of direction, driving in the wrong direction, running red lights, drunk driving, driving in the left lane, and improper passing, as stated by the DGSN in a press release.



In terms of traffic control and enforcement, security services issued 49,649 contraventions and prepared 7,735 reports that were submitted to the public prosecutor’s office. In addition, 41,914 fines were paid, totaling MAD 8,916,650.



Furthermore, the press release highlighted that 5,540 vehicles were impounded, 7,735 documents were withdrawn, and 607 vehicles were immobilized during this period.
