Security Council: United Kingdom Reiterated Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in Sahara

Rabat: “We welcome that this resolution (2797) highlights Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy proposal, which the UK considers the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis” for definitively settling this issue, underlined the Charg© d’Affaires at the British Permanent Mission to the UN, James Kariuki, following the adoption of the resolution by the Council on Friday.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the British diplomat also commended the work of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, calling on the parties to engage in good faith and in the spirit of compromise with negotiations aimed at reaching a final solution.

He further welcomed the United States’ leadership, the penholder of this resolution, which represents “a step” towards a just and lasting political solution to the regional dispute.
