Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway Named “Donald J. Trump Highway” Highlights Strong Morocco-US Relations

Tiznit: The Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway, named the “Donald J. Trump Highway,” is a powerful embodiment of deep friendly relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, as well as the great mutual esteem between His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, in a letter dated July 2, 2026, His Majesty King Mohammed VI informed the U.S. President of the Very High Royal Decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway the “Donald J. Trump Highway”. In this letter, His Majesty the King highlighted that the bilateral relations have been vibrant and fruitful, especially during President Trump’s two terms. The King emphasized that President Trump’s historic recognition in 2020 of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara region has significantly bolstered the bilateral relations.

To honor this mark of friendship and as a personal expression of appreciation, King Mohammed VI decided to name one of Morocco’s most significant highways after
President Trump. The “Donald J. Trump Highway,” stretching over 1,055 kilometers, is the longest road infrastructure in Africa and serves as a strategic axis of prime importance, connecting northern and southern Morocco while linking Europe to Africa.

In response, President Trump expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI in a message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 26, 2026. President Trump wrote, “Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco – Such a Great Honor! I look forward to traveling the entire length of this Great Highway someday, hopefully soon.”

This initiative underscores the exceptional strategic partnership between the two countries, a relationship that has grown stronger under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Trump. The expressway was built to international standards as part of the new development model for Southern provinces, launched by King Mohammed VI on the 40th anniversary of the Green March.

As one of the most significant
infrastructure projects in the Southern Provinces, this expressway connects Tiznit to Dakhla, passing through cities like Guelmim and Laayoune. It provides these regions with a highway up to international standards, offering a high level of security and reducing travel times, limiting traffic disruptions, and facilitating the transport of people and goods between Southern provinces and Morocco’s major economic hubs.

Beyond its infrastructural aspect, the “Donald J. Trump Highway” holds major strategic significance. It forms part of the Royal Vision aimed at transforming the Atlantic coast into an integrated space for development, cooperation, and shared prosperity with African countries. The highway’s naming also reflects the geopolitical dimension of this transformative project, promoting trade and economic complementarity in West Africa, as part of the major Atlantic initiatives led by King Mohammed VI.

This royal gesture underscores a solid exceptional strategic partnership between Morocco and the United
States, reflecting excellent ties between King Mohammed VI and President Trump. In a message on the occasion of the Glorious Throne Day, President Trump celebrated the 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco, emphasizing a bond forged in trust and mutual respect.

In this message, President Trump confirmed to King Mohammed VI that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution. The “Donald J. Trump Highway” complements numerous Royal Initiatives aimed at making Morocco a driving force for Africa’s development and a logistics hub facilitating trade between Europe and Africa.
