Washington: The United States’ reaffirmation of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara has been described as “a major endorsement at the highest international level,” according to Spanish political analyst Pedro Ignacio Altamirano.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this recognition is both “clear” and unequivocal, further confirming “the first-rate legal, political, and social legitimacy” of Morocco’s claim over the Sahara. Altamirano made these statements during an interview with MAP, following a meeting in Washington where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated this stance in discussions with Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Altamirano views the U.S. reaffirmation as a “strong signal” to parties who are resistant to dialogue. He pointed out the significance of Morocco’s autonomy initiative, calling it “a visionary initiative” that could potentially resolve the ongoing regional conflict.
Additionally, Altamirano highlighted the socio-economic development occurring in the southern provinces of Morocco, noting the various investment opportunities available in these areas.
