Washington: The U.S. has reiterated its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, reinforcing a ‘lasting strategic commitment’ towards Morocco as a trusted partner and a key player in regional stability, stated Spanish researcher Rafael Esparza Machn.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this affirmation was expressed during a meeting held in Washington between the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting highlighted a ‘consistent diplomatic approach’ that traces back to the historical roots of Morocco-U.S. relations, as noted by Esparza Machn.
Esparza Machn emphasized that the U.S.’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in 2020 marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship. This strategic orientation is further bolstered by a sustained consensus within Washington on this stance.
The U.S. views Morocco as a ‘reliable partner,’ essential for the region’s stability, Esparza Machn added. The robust ties between the two nations are built on solid foundations, including the 2005 Free Trade Agreement and bilateral military cooperation.
In this context, the Spanish academic underscored the U.S.’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan. He described it as serious, credible, and realistic, noting it as the only viable framework for achieving a lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
