UN Security Council Resolution 2797 Declared ‘Major Diplomatic Success’ for Morocco

Rabat: UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which enshrines the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the only basis for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, is being hailed as a significant diplomatic achievement for Morocco. ‘This is a realistic solution,’ commented a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to MAP.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Moroccan diplomacy has demonstrated patience and professionalism in managing the issue within a long-term strategic framework, under the leadership of His Majesty the King. The resolution is seen as a move that garners international support for a peaceful solution, as opposed to rhetoric that perpetuates regional conflict. CDU member Saysay highlighted that resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue is synonymous with security, stability, and business opportunities.

For Europe and Germany particularly, the resolution opens the door for closer cooperation with Morocco in areas such as energy, water, green industry, logistics, and digital innovation. The political science graduate emphasized the potential for enhanced collaboration and mutual benefits in these sectors.

Furthermore, Saysay noted the emotional and historical significance of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Green March, which will be celebrated shortly after the international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. ‘We will witness a day marked by pride, unity, and optimism for the future,’ she stated.
