The annual meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), scheduled for next October in Marrakech, will focus on revitalizing the global economy following the dual shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, said Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In an interview with the Moroccan news agency MAP on the sidelines of her visit to Morocco, Georgieva noted that “this situation has put pressure on the global economy to take measures to create job opportunities.”
“We also need to discuss ways of strengthening international cooperation,” she added, noting that “we need each other more than ever.”
Faced with the effects of climate change, the high level of debt in several countries, and artificial intelligence, which represents both an opportunity and a risk, the world is called upon to meet a number of challenges, she said.
Noting the global fragmentation and numerous tensions between countries, Georgieva regarded the Annual Meetings as an opportunity for the 190 members of the IMF to bridge gaps and collectively address these challenges.
She also voiced her gratitude to the Minister of Economy and Finance alongside Bank Al-Maghrib (Morocco’s Central Bank) for their remarkable efforts under the Head of Government’s leadership to ensure the success of these meetings.
She said that preparations are “progressing very well”, adding that she had the opportunity to visit the ‘Bab Ighli’ site where the annual meetings of the WB and the IMF will be held, adding that everything will be ready in September for testing before the meetings are held.
The IMF Chief also highlighted that Morocco, positioned at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, will showcase its splendid image to the world, characterized by its profound traditions, rich history, and dynamic economy.
