WTO Agreement Targets Elimination of Fishery Subsidies for Illegal Activities

Rabat: The World Trade Organization has reached a significant agreement focused on eliminating subsidies for illegal fishing activities, as confirmed by a government spokesperson. The agreement marks a critical step in addressing support for fishing practices that contribute to the depletion of global fish stocks.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the agreement also includes measures to cease subsidies for fishing activities related to overfished stocks. Government spokesperson Baitas emphasized, during a press briefing after a cabinet meeting, the importance of these efforts in maintaining sustainable biological levels of fishery resources. Baitas noted that the success of these objectives is contingent on transparency and notification measures, which enable member states to fulfill their international commitments more effectively in the realm of fisheries management.
