5th AU Training Cycle for African Election Observers Kicks Off in Rabat

Rabat: The 5th edition of the Training Cycle for African Election Observers of the African Union (AU) began on Monday in Rabat. The event was co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankol© Adeoye, with the African diplomatic corps and other notable attendees present.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this flagship program is widely recognized across Africa and marks a historic milestone by celebrating five years of strategic partnership between Morocco and the AU’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS). Launched in 2022, this initiative has become a key benchmark for strengthening electoral capacities and promoting transparent governance on the continent.

The training cycle, which will continue until April 25, demonstrates Morocco’s ongoing commitment to a stable and democratic Africa, aligning with the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The program aims to consolidate the foundations for an inclusive and peaceful political dialogue across the continent.

This year, the program has reached a significant milestone in inclusion, featuring strong participation from women and youth. This approach ensures that African election observation reflects the diversity of African societies. Additionally, this year’s training includes an innovative awareness module on “deepfakes,” focusing on digital elections and training observers to detect AI-generated disinformation or “deepfake” materials, which could be used to influence voters on election day.
