AI Governance and Ethics Highlighted at Judicial Training Session

Fez:The King’s Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation and President of the Public Prosecution Office, Hicham Balaoui, stressed the importance of understanding the limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) and establishing ethical safeguards. This was highlighted during a training session held for judicial officials from public prosecutors’ offices.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Balaoui emphasized that AI should not only be explored for its technical capabilities but also guided by ethical considerations, particularly as its significance grows in areas such as criminal justice, privacy protection, and the right to a fair trial. These issues arise amid rapid technological changes worldwide, posing ethical, legal, and human rights challenges that necessitate appropriate oversight.

Balaoui also underscored the necessity for AI technologies to adhere to the Rule of Law and international human rights standards. Meanwhile, Samir Marmouri from the Geneva Center for Security Sector Governance, which co-organized the session with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, noted the event as part of Morocco’s broader efforts to enhance governance in the justice sector and develop judicial skills.

The two-day program includes discussions on AI applications in crime fighting, international regulatory frameworks, and procedural safeguards, with a focus on personal data protection, human oversight, and accountability mechanisms. The event features both theoretical presentations and practical workshops addressing the challenges AI poses in criminal investigations and prosecutions.
