Marrakech: Lucas Philippe of France has been elected as the new President of Interpol, following the conclusion of Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi’s term from the United Arab Emirates. Philippe secured his position with 84 votes, representing 51.2% of the total votes, surpassing his closest competitor, Mustafa Serkan Sabanca of Turkey, who received 60 votes, amounting to 36.6%.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the election also saw candidates Anne-Marie Nainda of Namibia and Demelash Gebremicheal Wewdeyes of Ethiopia receiving 12 votes (7.3%) and 8 votes (4.9%), respectively. The election process follows the “one country, one vote” principle, ensuring each member country’s vote holds equal weight.
In his new role as President, Lucas Philippe will chair the Executive Committee meetings, playing a crucial part in overseeing the implementation of decisions made during the General Assembly. The position is part-time and unpaid, requiring Philippe to lead the General Assembly and the three annual sessions of the Ex
ecutive Committee.
INTERPOL’s constitution mandates that the President ensures all organizational activities align with the decisions of the General Assembly and Executive Committee. Philippe is also tasked with maintaining a direct and ongoing relationship with the Organization’s Secretary General.
