From Marrakech, New Interpol Pres. Pledges to Strengthen Security Cooperation with Morocco

Marrakech: Lucas Philippe, the newly elected president of Interpol, has vowed to enhance security cooperation with Morocco. Speaking at Interpol’s 93rd General Assembly, Philippe emphasized the importance of reinforcing existing ties with the Kingdom, citing respect, hard work, and collective intelligence as foundational values.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Philippe expressed his commitment to prioritizing this cooperation and celebrated the opportunity to uphold Interpol’s ideas and values in Morocco. He also pledged to protect Interpol’s heritage and maintain the momentum necessary to achieve shared objectives through a pragmatic and feasible plan.

Philippe highlighted the importance of translating ideas into concrete actions and ensuring global representation within the organization. He was elected with 84 votes, securing 51.2% of the votes at the assembly held in Marrakech from November 24 to 27. Philippe succeeds Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi of the United Arab Emirates, whose term has concluded.

The Interpol General Assembly elects the President and Executive Committee members based on a “one country, one vote” principle, giving equal weight to each vote. As President, Philippe will chair Executive Committee meetings, overseeing the implementation of decisions made at the General Assembly.

The President’s role, which is part-time and unpaid, includes chairing the General Assembly and three sessions of the Executive Committee annually. Interpol’s constitution mandates the President to ensure compliance with decisions made by the General Assembly and Executive Committee and to maintain a direct relationship with the organization’s Secretary General.
