INTERPOL GA Urges Ratification of UN Convention against Cybercrime

Lyon: In a resolution adopted during the session held from November 24 to 27, INTERPOL’s highest governing body emphasized the significance of a coherent, harmonized international approach to combating cybercrime. The resolution called for enhanced cooperation and information sharing among INTERPOL, its member countries, and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the General Assembly encouraged member states to continue promoting INTERPOL’s secure global police communication systems, including NEXUS, along with notices and alerts, criminal data analysis, the Cybercrime Program, capacity-building initiatives, and technical and operational support. The resolution underscored the necessity for better use of these tools, particularly by national units specializing in online fraud, sexual exploitation, and abuse of children on the internet, as well as other offenses committed through information and communication technology.

The resolution also advocated for close cooperation between national central bureaus and their UN representatives to advance INTERPOL’s role during regular meetings of the Conference of the States Parties to the Convention and in negotiations on additional protocols. Furthermore, the 93rd General Assembly emphasized the importance of ensuring that INTERPOL’s channels, tools, and programs are fully recognized and integrated into United Nations and multilateral platforms, thereby enhancing the ability of law enforcement agencies to effectively respond to transnational threats.
