Rabat: Making Morocco-Spain relations a subject of political disagreements could turn the gains achieved between the two countries following the Joint Declaration of April 7, 2022, into a source of recurring tensions, academic Abdelfattah Elfatihi said.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, in a statement reacting to clarifications provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the latest developments in Morocco-Spain relations, Elfatihi emphasized Morocco’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations. These relations have become the cornerstone of strategic cooperation in political, economic, and migration management fields, which have garnered international acclaim. He stressed the importance of safeguarding these achievements rather than allowing them to be devalued.

Elfatihi highlighted that Morocco-Spain relations should be grounded in equality and mutual respect. He pointed out that Morocco refuses to be used for domestic political agendas, especially when experienced political parties engage in practices that prioritize irrational one-upmanship and populism over rational discourse.

He concluded by stating that the regrettable events of last July necessitate management characterized by wisdom and adherence to agreed commitments to prevent their recurrence.
