Rabat: Under the leadership of HM the King, Morocco has heavily invested in the Southern Provinces, transforming the region both economically and infrastructure-wise, according to von Schirach, President of the Global Policy Institute. In an interview with MAP, marking the 50th anniversary of the Green March, von Schirach highlighted the significant changes in the Moroccan Sahara.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, von Schirach, who is also a professor at Bay Atlantic University in Washington D.C., recounted his 2023 visit to the Moroccan Sahara, where he observed the region’s socio-economic development. He emphasized that the Sahara is a natural and historical extension of Moroccan territory and its future lies within the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Von Schirach pointed out the strategic importance of the Sahara region, crediting its world-class infrastructure, such as the forthcoming Dakhla Atlantic port, which positions it as a crucial link between Africa and the Americas. He also praised Morocco’s solidarity with Africa under His Majesty’s leadership, citing initiatives for the continent’s development, stability, and prosperity, including the Royal Atlantic Initiative.
The expert stressed the significance of resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, noting its positive impact on the stability and prosperity of the Maghreb and Sahel regions. He commended Morocco’s path to sustainable development and efforts in the Southern Provinces, which he believes have a strong potential for success.
Von Schirach concluded by highlighting Morocco’s strategic investment in its people, recognizing human capital as the country’s greatest wealth.
