Morocco Elected as Head of International Olive Council for 2026 in Cordoba

Cordoba: Morocco has been elected as the head of the International Olive Council (IOC) for the year 2026. This election underscores Morocco’s significant role in the olive-growing sector, being one of the eleven founding members of the IOC. The country has maintained a historic and consistent presence within this body, alongside other member states that collectively represent 94% of global olive production.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the IOC was established in 1959 in Madrid under the auspices of the United Nations and stands as the only intergovernmental organization dedicated to olive oil and table olives. The 122nd session of the IOC was notable for the adoption of the Cordoba Declaration, which outlines a shared vision for sustainable olive cultivation globally. This declaration, adopted by agriculture ministers and partner international organizations, signifies a unified commitment to promoting and modernizing the olive sector while enhancing its resilience.

The Cordoba Declaration reaffirms the strategic significance of the olive tree, an ancient species that symbolizes peace, wisdom, and civilization. It also emphasizes the olive tree’s essential role in food security, human health, biodiversity conservation, combating desertification, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

During the IOC’s 122nd session, the council highlighted its strategic role in supporting the olive sector, focusing on sustainability and product quality. Member states discussed several priority initiatives, such as developing a carbon footprint tool for olive groves, promoting the IOC in Brazil, updating the statistical dashboard, and improving quality standards and analytical methods.
