New York:Morocco has announced its intention to pursue a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term, emphasizing its role as a significant regional and international player, according to Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Bourita articulated this ambition during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where he led the Moroccan delegation. He highlighted Morocco’s diplomatic approach, which is rooted in a long-standing tradition and guided by the vision of King Mohammed VI on global issues. Elections for the non-permanent seats will take place in June 2027.

Bourita pointed out Morocco’s initiatives in various areas, including the African Convention on the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of Child Soldiers, which several African nations signed this week. Additionally, he discussed the Atlantic African States Process (AASP), noting its growing acceptance among member states and its role in fostering maritime cooperation.

The minister also mentioned upcoming events hosted by Gabon, Cabo Verde, and Morocco to further the AASP’s objectives. These initiatives aim to enhance maritime security and cooperation amidst global geopolitical tensions.

During the UN General Assembly, Morocco co-hosted a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme on public-private partnerships for development, showcasing the country’s commitment to international collaboration. Bourita also highlighted Morocco’s efforts in combating hate speech through interreligious and intercultural dialogue, co-chairing a related conference with UN officials.

These actions underscore Morocco’s efforts to provide platforms for dialogue and promote constructive solutions on global issues, as part of its active participation in the UN General Assembly.
