London – British MP Liam Fox has sent a letter to Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Cameron, stressing the importance of a “UK’s more proactive and supportive stance” on the Moroccan Sahara issue.
A more proactive and supportive stance towards Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative is essential not only for diplomatic relations but also for the broader context of international peace and cooperation, the Conservative MP wrote.
By adopting such a stance, the United Kingdom would also be aligned with its closest allies’ positions, such as the United States, France, Germany, Spain, and The Netherlands, all of which support Morocco’s Initiative, he added.
“During my visits to Morocco, I observed firsthand the remarkable development efforts and the potential the country holds,” assured the member of the House of Commons.
The advancements in infrastructure, social services, and economic growth are testament to Morocco’s commitment to the region’s prosperity, particularly in the
Sahara, stressed the MP, who underscored the importance of a “stable and constructive solution to the Sahara issue, which Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative seeks to provide.”
Fox invited the head of British diplomacy to visit Morocco and the Southern provinces in particular, pointing out that “the current status quo is not conducive to progress, and a visit could mark a significant step towards a more informed and effective UK foreign policy in the region.”
“Morocco has consistently proven itself to be a key player and ally to the UK, especially in areas of mutual interest such as security, trade, and diplomacy,” Fox recalled.
“The country’s strategic location and stability make it an invaluable partner in a region often marked by uncertainty. Morocco’s commitment to combating regional threats, coupled with its growing economy and continental stature, presents numerous opportunities for the UK government and British businesses,” he assured.
” The alignment of values and visions between our two nations forms t
he cornerstone of a robust and mutually beneficial relationship,” Fox added, stressing the importance of “strengthening our alliance with Morocco”, in these times of global instability and shifting diplomatic scenarios.
“This enhanced cooperation will reinforce our shared goals of upholding peace and security both regionally, in the African continent, and worldwide,” the MP concluded.
