Smooth Operation of 2026 Legislative Elections with Decline in Complaints

Accra:Public Prosecution Head The September 23, 2026 elections proceeded smoothly and under favorable conditions, marking a significant decrease in complaints compared to the 2021 elections.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Mourad El Alami, head of the Public Action, Monitoring of the Implementation of Criminal Policy and Analysis of Criminal Phenomena Division at the Presidency of the Public Prosecution, reported that 403 complaints were registered during this election, a notable reduction from the 1,071 complaints recorded in 2021.

The Public Prosecution Offices received complaints both directly and through digital applications set up to facilitate remote submissions by citizens. Election day itself saw the highest number of complaints filed.

El Alami emphasized that judicial investigations were conducted with precision, efficiency, and promptness, usually completing within 48 hours. Most complaints related to typical electoral offenses like acts of violence, abusive language, and privacy violations. There was also a noticeable rise in crimes committed through electronic means, particularly on social media, involving defamation or privacy violations.

Specifically, four complaints about the failure to hand over copies of election minutes were recorded in Guelmim, Fahs-Anjra, and Souk El Arbaa du Gharb. Two of these complaints were dismissed due to lack of evidence, while the other two remain under investigation.

El Alami explained that the Organic Law on the House of Representatives requires the presence of a candidate’s delegate at the polling station when minutes are drawn up to constitute an offense. Absence at this crucial time invalidates potential legal proceedings.

The election process was closely monitored by the Public Prosecution Offices to ensure compliance with legal standards and to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
