UNSC Resolution on Moroccan Sahara Highlights Impact of King’s Diplomacy, Says Washington Institute Director

Washington: “This is an impressive achievement. It is truly the result of long-term efforts led by His Majesty the King and supported by all political, governmental, and economic actors,” stated Satloff in an interview with MAP.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Security Council Resolution 2797, which enshrines the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the basis for any solution to the regional dispute, provides “clear support for the approach adopted by Morocco” to definitively resolve this issue, the U.S. expert explained.

“This is a major breakthrough for Morocco, reflecting years of diplomatic efforts on the ground to secure support, country by country, capital by capital,” he added, noting that this key turning point in the Moroccan Sahara issue also reflects the “deepened partnership with the United States,” the penholder of the Security Council resolution and an influential permanent member at this UN executive body.

Robert Satloff also highlighted the Kingdom’s significant efforts in terms of investment in infrastructure and strategic projects, as well as socio-economic development in the Southern Provinces, emphasizing that these efforts have, in turn, greatly contributed to Morocco’s strategy aiming to bring this artificial conflict to an end.

“I visited the city of Dakhla, where one can see the enormous investments that have been made (…) and we know that this has an impact and suggests to other countries that this is not just a political claim,” but that this region of the Kingdom is an integral part of the Moroccan economy and society as a whole, he concluded.
