Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Sahara Gains Global Support, Says Belgian Expert

Rabat: Countries worldwide are increasingly recognizing the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara as the sole path to lasting peace, as highlighted by Resolution 2797, recently adopted by the UN Security Council, according to Saerens, a Belgian expert, who spoke to MAP.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Moroccan autonomy plan has garnered the backing of major international powers and numerous countries globally. This support reflects a genuine desire to resolve the issue definitively through a political and lasting solution based on Morocco’s legitimate rights over its Sahara.

Saerens, a university professor, also emphasized that the southern provinces of Morocco have become an economic magnet. They benefit from investments and major infrastructure projects aligned with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This vision aims to transform the region into a hub for development and cooperation.

These developments are part of a comprehensive territorial development process that includes every region of the Kingdom, according to Saerens. He noted that from Tangier Med in the North to the major Atlantic port of Dakhla in the South, Morocco is experiencing an economic boom that continues to grow annually.

Morocco’s role as a development engine for the entire African continent is increasingly prominent, strengthened by the growth of the southern provinces. These provinces play a central role in the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which aims to open up the Sahel region to the Atlantic Ocean, the Belgian expert noted.

Saerens also highlighted the strong symbolism of the 50th anniversary of the Green March. This celebration marks a significant success for the Kingdom in completing its territorial integrity, advancing all its regions, and serving as a model of development and stability for the African continent.
