Rabat: The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) is seeking to improve its standing in the upcoming legislative elections and secure top positions, the party’s First Secretary, Driss Lachgar, said.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Lachgar noted that the USFP, currently the fourth-largest party in the House of Representatives, “aims to improve its position in the next election and be part of the future government coalition, or even lead it.” He emphasized the party’s goal to regain its “political standing” through the elections, stressing that its resilience and strong presence on the ground across various sectors would enable it to approach the vote with confidence. The USFP is determined to field candidates in all local and regional electoral constituencies, he added.

Lachgar also highlighted the USFP’s commitment to increasing the participation of women and young people, noting strong female participation in local constituencies and efforts to encourage women with parliamentary or municipal experience to run. On the electoral process, he mentioned that the September 23 vote comes within a national democratic context where elections have become regular events with dates set in advance.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress made in electoral practice and territorial administration, as well as the broad political consensus over the transparency and good governance of the electoral process. Regarding the party’s decision to remain in opposition and abstain from voting on the electoral legislation, Lachgar said this was due to the failure to meet all of the USFP’s demands.

These demands included securing female representation of more than one-third, adopting territorial rather than regional lists, increasing the number of parliamentary seats, and establishing mechanisms to ensure the participation of Moroccans residing abroad.
