Rabat: The proposed revision of the Family Code confirms Morocco’s position as a “regional leader” in legal modernization and the strengthening of women’s and children’s rights, said Spanish scholar Oliver Klein. The revision of the Family Code responds to one of the major priorities set by HM King Mohammed VI since his ascension to the throne, consolidating women’s rights and ensuring better protection of children’s rights, Klein told MAP.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this project continues the fundamental reforms initiated at the Sovereign’s accession to the throne, marking a decisive step in the country’s social modernization, he noted. Klein emphasized that the efforts in infrastructure development and services across all regions of Morocco are extended through this social reform, placing the family at the heart of national priorities.
Morocco, through this reform, is positioning itself as a “leader and an example to follow” by progressing toward gradual modernization while preserving the authenticity of its civilization, Klein stated. This reform prioritizes equality between men and women in accordance with the Constitution and Morocco’s international commitments, reflecting a significant evolution in Moroccan family law. This evolution is the result of broad consensus on the central role of women and youth in driving change.
Klein highlighted that women have long played a fundamental role in social transformations, while young people aspire to more open models connected to global dynamics. Moreover, he praised the approach adopted to implement this reform, expressing satisfaction that it is based on national dialogue involving various sectors of society, ensuring that the Family Code reflects the expectations and needs of all.
The Spanish scholar further acknowledged Morocco’s efforts to align its legal framework with international human rights standards while preserving the country’s religious and cultural specifics.
