HCCH 1st African Office in Morocco Poised to Raise Profile of Cross-Border Law, Says SG

Rabat: The Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) Secretary General Christophe Bernasconi announced the launch of the Regional Office for Africa in Morocco, emphasizing its potential to enhance the visibility of the organization’s work among African authorities.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Bernasconi stated in a press release during the 1st Forum of Ambassadors of African States, held in Rabat prior to the office’s inauguration, that the new office will significantly promote the dissemination of information regarding the HCCH’s activities throughout the African continent.

The forum highlighted the office’s missions, strategic objectives, and the potential for African cooperation in implementing Hague Conventions and bolstering regional legal coordination in private international law.

The HCCH Secretary General believes that the establishment of the office will encourage African states to join the organization and participate in conventions related to child protection, international family law, international commercial and financial litigation, and digital law.

Morocco’s Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, considers the HCCH Regional Office for Africa in Morocco a strategic tool for enhancing cross-border legal and judicial cooperation among African nations. He noted that Morocco’s accumulated experience in conventional, legislative, and institutional practices in private international law underscores its role as a crucial player in the global efforts led by the Hague Conference.
