Morocco: King Mohammed VI Pardons 20,000 Convicts on 26th Throne Day Celebrations


Rabat: King Mohammed VI of Morocco has granted royal pardons to 20,000 convicts in celebration of the 26th Throne Day. The pardons include a mix of full sentence remissions and reductions in prison terms and fines.



According to Nam News Network, the traditional Throne Day clemency accounted for 2,415 of the pardons. This group comprises 2,239 individuals currently serving prison sentences and 176 individuals who have been sentenced but are not incarcerated. In a significant gesture, five prisoners had their life sentences commuted to fixed-term prison terms.



Additionally, 17,258 inmates were granted clemency based on defined humanitarian and legal criteria. The Throne Day celebrations are marked annually in Morocco, and the royal pardon is a customary part of the festivities, reflecting the king’s commitment to justice and compassion.
