Morocco-Senegal Partnership Built on Strong Human, Religious, and Economic Foundations

Rabat: Relations between Morocco and Senegal are anchored in solid foundations that integrate human, religious, and economic dimensions, said Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch during the 15th Morocco-Senegal High Joint Partnership Commission in Rabat. He emphasized that these ties reflect “a natural and lasting relationship, and not a product of the moment or a circumstantial alliance.”

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Akhannouch highlighted that historic trade routes connecting Morocco to its African roots have significantly contributed to this rapprochement, particularly through Senegal, thereby promoting economic and human exchanges. These exchanges have facilitated deep cultural and social connections between the two nations over centuries.

Akhannouch underscored the religious and spiritual ties, citing the institution of the Commandery of the Faithful and Sufi brotherhoods, notably the Tariqa Tijaniya, as pivotal in enhancing relations between the peoples. He also noted that visits by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Senegal and a comprehensive legal framework encompassing over 140 cooperation agreements have further cemented these bonds.

The session’s proceedings illustrate the ongoing commitment of Morocco and Senegal to bolster their cooperation, aligning with the aspirations of their leaders, His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Akhannouch pointed to the strengthening of bilateral relations, especially since President Diomaye Faye’s election, through ministerial visits and increased economic presence and investment.

Akhannouch stressed the necessity of adapting existing agreements to foster new momentum and unlock promising prospects for the private sector, given the regional and international context and the pace of increased cooperation. He expressed optimism for Africa despite its challenges, noting the shared vision of Morocco and Senegal for accelerating African integration based on solidarity and their alignment on strategic issues.

Highlighting initiatives by HM King Mohammed VI, Akhannouch mentioned efforts to facilitate access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean and the Royal Atlantic Initiative aimed at fostering development and stability in the Atlantic African region. He also referenced the Atlantic Africa Gas Pipeline project, connecting Nigeria to Morocco, with Senegal playing a central role.

On the Moroccan Sahara issue, Akhannouch commended Senegal’s active support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its autonomy plan as the resolution to the regional dispute, as per UN Security Council Resolution 2797. He reiterated Morocco’s commitment to a comprehensive vision for youth and sports under HM King Mohammed VI’s leadership, seeing it as a bridge for cultural communication and human and economic development.

Akhannouch concluded by affirming the enduring fraternal spirit between Morocco and Senegal, highlighting the valuable contributions of the Moroccan community in Senegal and the Senegalese community in Morocco to the exceptional partnership between the two nations. He reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing this strategic partnership in line with the vision of both countries’ leaders.
