Morocco’s Energy Assets Highlighted by French Special Envoy

Rabat: Morocco has exceptional energy assets, the Special Envoy of the French President for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, G©rard Mestrallet, said on Thursday in Rabat. These assets include “a strong and steady wind, particularly in the south, remarkable sunshine, available land, a well-structured administrative and ministerial organization, a hydrogen supply,” and proximity to Europe, Mestrallet told the press following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, these advantages position Morocco as a key energy partner for Europe. Mestrallet noted that discussions and ongoing work on this matter are “extremely promising.” Talks also covered the production of hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuel, the transportation of this energy, and the potential connectivity between Morocco, France, and by extension, Europe.

“We are here to explore all these prospects, with a particular focus on the possible electrical connection between Morocco (Nador) and France (Marseille),” he added. Both sides are conducting in-depth work on the conditions that would make this connection feasible.

For his part, Baraka said discussions also focused on the possibility of exporting green hydrogen from Morocco to France via Moroccan port infrastructure. The minister emphasized the key role that Nador West Med port could play in Morocco’s energy development.

The meeting, held as part of the energy cooperation agreement signed between Morocco and France during French President Emmanuel Macron’s State visit to the Kingdom, was attended by France’s ambassador to Rabat, Christophe Lecourtier, and the Chairman of the management board of France’s electricity transmission network operator, Xavier Piechaczyk.
