Morocco’s Foreign Minister Engages in Strategic Talks with Russia’s Sergey Lavrov

Moscow: Morocco’s Foreign Minister recently held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, as part of the Deepened Strategic Partnership established between King Mohammed VI and President Vladimir Putin in March 2016. The meeting underscored the robust partnership between Morocco and Russia, guided by the vision of the two leaders.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, both ministers praised the ongoing collaboration and expressed their commitment to elevating Moroccan-Russian relations. The discussions focused on leveraging the potential of their bilateral ties, grounded in historical friendship and fruitful cooperation.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to create a Russian-Moroccan Working Committee within their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. This committee aims to evaluate the partnership and propose new areas of high-value cooperation to deepen and project bilateral relations into the future.

The ministers also agreed to maintain regular political dialogue and monitor existing agreements, seeking to inject renewed momentum into their strategic partnership. In addition to bilateral matters, they discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest, particularly concerning North Africa, the Sahel, and the Middle East.

This meeting is part of an ongoing dialogue between the two ministers, which occurs in various settings, including bilateral visits and on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. During his visit to Moscow, Morocco’s Foreign Minister is also co-chairing the 8th session of the Joint Cooperation Commission with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev.

The relationship between Morocco and Russia has seen significant growth since King Mohammed VI ascended the throne, marked by royal visits to Moscow in 2002 and 2016, and an official visit by President Vladimir Putin to Morocco in 2006.
