Brussels: Nadia Kounda has been honored with the Best Actress award at the Brussels International Film Festival (BRIFF) for her performance in the film ‘The Ants’. Produced in 2025, ‘The Ants’ was one of the five feature films in the international competition, selected from an initial pool of 250 works reviewed by the festival’s committee.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this impactful movie transports viewers into the heart of Tangier, offering a nuanced and deeply human perspective on often invisible migratory journeys. It is recognized as the most selected Moroccan film in international festivals in 2025. Having already been screened in Durban, Paris, and Brussels, ‘The Ants’ is set to continue its tour in London, New York, Nairobi, and Kinshasa.
The 90-minute feature is part of a new wave of North African cinema that examines the dynamics of intra-African migration. Through three interwoven destinies, the film illuminates the complex realities of migration, ambition, and redemption across the African continent. The narrative begins with F©licit©, a young Cameroonian woman attempting to provide her deceased friend with a dignified funeral in Morocco. Her journey brings her into contact with Hamid, a man caught between his ideals and compromises, as well as Kenza and Badr, an upper-class couple confronting their own biases toward others.
Another Moroccan entry, the short film ‘A Holiday Story’ by Malika Zairi, also competed at the 10th edition of the BRIFF, held from October 28 to November 1. This film delicately explores identity and intergenerational tensions within Moroccan diaspora families. The BRIFF, organized as a traveling event between Brussels and several African cities, aims to serve as a platform for dialogue between African and European cinemas, fostering discovery, exchange, and the advancement of bold and innovative creations.
