Rabat: The reaffirmation by the United States of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara “is a relevant position,” former UK Minister of State for Defense Andrew Murrison stated. Murrison, who serves as a member of the House of Commons and co-chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Morocco in the Westminster Parliament, emphasized the significance of this stance.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Murrison expressed his views on Wednesday, noting the position taken by President Donald Trump’s administration regarding the Moroccan Sahara. He encouraged his government to adopt a “more pragmatic” approach similar to that of the United States and other European countries concerning the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
His comments followed a meeting on Tuesday in Washington between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During this meeting, Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
A statement from the U.S. Department of State released after the meeting highlighted that the United States believes “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution.” The statement also conveyed the U.S. President’s encouragement for involved parties to engage in discussions promptly, using Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as the framework for negotiations to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
