UN SG Hails Ambassador Omar Hilale’s ‘Open, Inclusive’ Approach at Mid-East Disarmament Conference


New york: Ambassador Hilale has successfully chaired the 6th session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of nuclear weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, which was held November 17 through 21 in New York and concluded with the unanimous adoption of its final report.



According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, in a press statement put out by his spokesperson, the UN chief commended the “open, inclusive and consensus-based” approach adopted by the Conference President, Ambassador Hilale and the Conference Member States with a view to “advancing the negotiations toward a future treaty.”



This recognition crowns the leading role that Morocco plays on the international stage and within the UN system, under the enlightened leadership and forward-looking vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.



In his statement, Guterres also welcomed the “success” of this international conference, saying he was encouraged by the “tangible and steady progress” the Conference has made over its successive sessions.



The UN chief also assured the participating States of the Conference of the United Nations’ continuing support for this crucial endeavor to rid the Middle East – and the world – of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction.
