Marrakech: Young leaders from several countries presented, on Saturday in Marrakech, pioneering road safety initiatives at a panel discussion held as part of the 3rd World Youth Assembly for Road Safety. The panel was an opportunity to learn about some inspiring projects developed by young leaders, which have had a great impact on their communities and on urban road safety and mobility.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, young Kenyan leader Mary Abungo presented her ‘Save a life’ project, aimed at overcoming gaps in road safety data. The project serves as an inclusive framework to improve collaboration mechanisms between all stakeholders involved in road safety. This initiative also calls for the integration of youth in decision making and the development of mechanisms to improve road safety and reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the roads.
Young Peruvian leader Jeremy Leandro shared his daily struggle to improve road safety for cyclists. A tireless campaigner, the young Peruvian never ceases to ‘demand change through concrete action, for the benefit of this category of vulnerable users,’ notably multiplying safer cycle paths in towns and cities, and planning all road construction projects with this category of road users in mind.
The young Egyptian leader Lojaina Abdelmawla, a project manager in a road safety company, has developed a project called ‘Now I See,’ aimed at improving road safety for the visually impaired. This initiative aims to ensure safer mobility for this vulnerable category through a number of measures and actions, including setting up ‘tactile paving stones,’ increasing the number of crosswalks and installing clear traffic signs.
