Amended Morocco-EU Agreement Highlights Global Interest in Moroccan Sahara as Business Hub

Brussels: “The Moroccan Sahara is fast emerging as a hub connecting the four corners of the world to the fast-growing economy of the African continent,” Majid told MAP in reaction to the signing, Friday in Brussels, of an exchange of letters amending the Morocco-EU agricultural agreement. The major global economic players see the importance of this region, which is part and parcel of Morocco, in getting access to Africa’s markets and investment potential, thanks to its world-class infrastructures. The Moroccan Sahara has become a zone of development, connectivity and prosperity, Majid added.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Majid recalled the U.S. administration’s decision, announced last week, to encourage American companies to invest in the kingdom’s southern provinces, in the wake of Washington’s reaffirmed recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara. For the academic, the amended Morocco-EU agreement is another indication from the EU to the importance of the longstanding, solid and multifaceted strategic partnership with Morocco.

Morocco and the EU signed, Friday at the European commission headquarters, the exchange of letters amending the agricultural agreement binding both parties, which reflect their strong partnership grounded in extended multidimensional cooperation. The agreement paves the way for a more ambitious and structured cooperation with Brussels, by reinforcing existing political mechanisms and laying the foundations of a deepened strategic partnership.
