Cairo: Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday welcomed Morocco’s election to chair the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), during a meeting of the Arab League Council in Cairo.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, a statement was issued at the close of the Council’s 163rd session at the ministerial level, where the ministers praised the Kingdom’s appointment. This appointment took place last month during GANHRI’s General Assembly, held on the sidelines of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The meeting also reviewed regional and international developments, including the situation in Palestine, as well as key political and socio-economic issues facing the Arab world. Preparations for the upcoming Arab Summit, set for May 17 in Baghdad, were also discussed.
Morocco was represented at the session by a delegation led by Mohamed Ait Ouali, the country’s ambassador to Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League. The delegation also included Abdelali El Jahid, head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Hicham Ould Essallay, deputy permanent representative to the Arab League.
