Rabat: The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Bankole Adeoye, emphasized the importance of elections observation in Africa while speaking at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Rabat. Adeoye highlighted the critical role this practice plays in reinforcing the principles of democracy across the continent.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the remarks were made during the opening of the 2nd Seminar-Dialogue on Elections and Democracy in Africa. The event was organized by the AU’s Commission alongside the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS) under the theme ‘Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Electoral and Democratic Processes in Africa.’ Adeoye acknowledged Morocco as a reliable partner in enhancing the capacity of electoral observers in the region.
He underscored the continent’s commitment to peace, stability, and the promotion of the rule of law and social justice, stating that the AU is on the right path to uphold and preserve democracy. Adeoye further called for increased participation of women and youth in democratic processes to ensure transparent and credible elections.
Additionally, Adeoye pointed out the connection between development and democracy, noting that democracy is essential to human civilization and contributes significantly to modernizing and transforming societies.
Karim El Aynaoui, Executive President of the PCNS, also spoke at the seminar, highlighting the relevance of this year’s theme as a major challenge for Africa. He emphasized the necessity for more inclusive and effective governance, advocating for active participation of women in the political and electoral spheres.
