Ecuador Endorses Autonomy Plan to Resolve Moroccan Sahara Dispute

Rabat: Ecuador has declared its support for the autonomy initiative as a viable solution to the ongoing regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This stance was articulated by Gabriela Sommerfeld, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Republic of Ecuador, during a press briefing after her discussions with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Ecuador aligns its position with the majority of United Nations member states, backing Morocco’s endeavors to reach a political resolution that is realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable within the United Nations framework. This reflects a broader international consensus aimed at addressing the longstanding issue.

Ecuador’s decision to support Morocco’s efforts comes after its withdrawal of recognition for the so-called “sadr” on October 22, 2024, thereby cutting all diplomatic ties with the entity. This move signifies a clear shift in Ecuador’s foreign policy concerning the Moroccan Sahara dispute.
