France Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Sovereignty in Sahara Dispute at UN Security Council

New york: At the United Nations Security Council, France has reiterated its support for the resolution of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. France’s ambassador to the UN, J©rome Bonnafont, emphasized that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only basis for achieving a just, lasting, and negotiated political solution” following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the ambassador highlighted an emerging international consensus towards supporting Moroccan sovereignty, urging the Security Council to capitalize on this momentum. He described the adoption of the resolution as a collective success and expressed France’s belief in the possibility of a mutually acceptable political solution. Bonnafont called for the Personal Envoy to bridge the parties to reach a final resolution of the conflict, reaffirming France’s full support for this endeavor.

The ambassador also noted that the resolution represents a new approach under United Nations auspices, encouraging the parties to engage in renewed efforts towards peace. He stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity presented by the resolution, which aims to foster a stable environment in the region. Bonnafont urged for a cessation of hostilities and full respect for the ceasefire to mitigate risks to the populations affected by the conflict.

Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the resolution would enable MINURSO to continue playing a vital role in regional stability. The resolution, he concluded, offers a horizon of peace and calls on the Personal Envoy and the parties to courageously engage in negotiations to end the prolonged conflict for the benefit of the region’s populations and countries.
