Rabat: Since April 2025, this international dynamic has undergone significant new developments, marked by a widened support for the Moroccan Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy Initiative, as well as by ongoing momentum on the ground.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, more than 40 countries reconfirmed their full backing of the Moroccan Sahara and the Moroccan autonomy Initiative as the one and only political solution to this regional dispute, increasing the circle of support to 123 countries worldwide, representing more than 60% of UN member states.
These countries include the United States, which reiterated its acknowledgment of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, while supporting the serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.
The United Kingdom also expressed its support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal, which it considers “the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis for a lasting resolution” of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
France has reaffirmed its constant position since the French President’s speech to the Moroccan Parliament in October 2024. This stance has also been echoed by the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, several African countries, including Kenya, and countries from Latin America and Asia. The Republic of Korea, for example, has declared its acknowledgment of the Moroccan autonomy plan. Additionally, nine European countries have shown support following a diplomatic tour in April 2025 by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.
Among these European countries, five have reconfirmed their previous stance, while four new ones – the UK, Croatia, Moldavia, and Slovakia – now recognize the Moroccan autonomy Initiative as the most serious basis for resolving the regional dispute.
Several foreign delegations continue to make regular economic visits to support the development of Morocco’s southern provinces, benefiting the local population. This international momentum sends a clear message to the UN and other parties to assume their responsibilities in resolving this dispute and to adapt to the evolving political and diplomatic landscape.
