Rabat: Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, has declared the autonomy initiative as the “only serious, credible and realistic basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This statement was made during a press briefing following his meeting with Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Guatemalan diplomat expressed his country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s efforts to find a political, realistic, pragmatic, and lasting solution that is mutually acceptable for the Moroccan Sahara issue. This aligns with the broader commitment of both nations to uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the Republic of Guatemala demonstrated its support by becoming the first Latin American country to establish a Consulate General in the city of Dakhla in December 2022. This move signifies a deepening of diplomatic and cooperative ties between Guatemala and Morocco.
