Japanese FM Reaffirms Japan’s Stance on Non-Recognition of Separatist Entity

Yokohama: Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya emphasized Japan’s position on non-recognition of a separatist entity during a meeting with African ministers and representatives of international organizations. Iwaya stated, “I would like to make it clear that the presence at this meeting of any entity that Japan does not recognize as a state does not affect Japan’s position on the status of that entity.”

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, this declaration aligns with Japan’s historical stance, as reiterated in previous meetings and public statements by the Japanese foreign minister. Japan aims to maintain clarity in its international relations, particularly in contexts where separatist entities seek legitimacy through participation in global forums.

Japan’s approach underscores its commitment to international legitimacy by refusing to acknowledge any legitimacy of the separatist entity’s involvement in gatherings like those under the African Union’s banner. This stance is supported by the United Nations and most of its member states, who similarly deny recognition to the separatist entity and endorse the autonomy plan introduced by Morocco in 2007.

The conference, TICAD-9, is being held in Yokohama, Japan, from August 19 to 23, with the primary goal of fostering development and cooperation across Africa, focusing on peace and stability.
