New York: Morocco, whose Sovereign, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, chairs the Al-Quds Committee, advocated on Monday in New York for respecting the ceasefire in Gaza, while expressing hope for the initiation of a genuine peace process in the Middle East.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, emphasized before the Security Council that the ceasefire agreement should pave the way for reconstruction in Gaza and the initiation of a real peace process. This process aims for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, living peacefully alongside Israel.
The ambassador highlighted that Morocco welcomes the enforcement of the ceasefire agreement and the progress towards halting hostilities and attacks on civilians. During the Security Council meeting, which was focused on the Middle East situation, including the Palestinian issue, Hilale expressed Morocco’s hope that the agreement will be fully respected and lead to the cessation of civilian attacks, release of hostages, return of displaced persons, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
Ambassador Hilale reiterated the importance of avoiding the resolution of one crisis only to encounter another, as emphasized by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in his message to the latest Arab Summit. He reiterated Morocco’s steadfast position on the Palestinian cause, seeing it as central to peace and stability in the region. He stated that Gaza should be part of the independent Palestinian territories under the Palestinian National Authority’s jurisdiction.
The ambassador also pointed out that ongoing Israeli unilateral actions in Al-Quds increase tensions. His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, underscores the importance of maintaining the legal, historical, and demographic status of the holy city, a hub for the three monotheistic religions and a symbol of respect and dialogue.
Additionally, Ambassador Hilale highlighted the Al-Quds Committee’s political and effective role in supporting the Palestinian people, particularly through the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency. During the open debate chaired by Algeria’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Hilale underscored the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), noting its essential humanitarian work since its inception.
Regarding Lebanon, Ambassador Hilale reaffirmed Morocco’s support for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty under the leadership of His Majesty the King. He also reiterated Morocco’s backing for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, supporting the right of its people to pursue their development and peace aspirations.
